Have you ever seen a pressure tank? These are large containers usually cylindric and conic in shape found in different manufacturing plants. Despite resembling a simple container, these tanks are very important for a lot of industries around the world.
A pressure tank could be a container designed to carry gas and liquid substances inside a pressurized environment different from the prevailing ambient pressure . For different industries, some gaseous and liquid materials are very integral for their operations. However, these materials are unstable when it comes in contact with an uncontrolled environment. Thus, a vessel designed to hold them is needed to be able to use it.
Different industries around the world use pressure tanks. They can be found in industries such as chemical, food, medicine or pharmaceuticals, paint or coatings, and ink. Moreover, industries which involve the use of high sanitary and sealing requirement also need these pressure tanks.
They can be in different shapes or sizes and are crafted specifically for the needs of the different industries. Although it can be in different shapes, most companies prefer the use of cone and cylinder shapes because it is easier to analyze and create. Other shapes like sphere are also difficult to manufacture thus it is more expensive than cylinders and cones. In contrast, cylinders are not as strong as spheres due to the weak points at the end.
The pressure tank dates back to the industrial revolution. During the last part of 1700s up to the early part of 1800s, most countries transitioned to new manufacturing processes. These included moving from hand production to various machine-operated processes. It also included dealing with iron production and chemical manufacturing. This was where pressure tanks entered. They aided a lot of industries during these period of transition.
These pressure tanks are designed with the ultimate goal of controlling these unstable elements so that they can be use without harm. Because of this apparent danger, government agencies regulate the use and manufacturing of this technology. A lot of standards are followed by industries around the world. Some of these are the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code in North America, the Pressure Equipment Directive of the European Union and the Japanese Industrial Standards.
When it comes to choosing materials for pressure tanks production, engineers and designers think of a lot of factors. One of which is if the material considered is chemically stable when interacted with other chemicals.
A lot of pressure tanks are made of steel. It is a suitable material because it is mechanically strong, able to withstand most pressures and are also corrosion resistant. Other pressure tanks are made of composite materials such as carbon fiber. In this case the tank will be lighter than usual but it is very complicated to manufacture. Polymers are also very common materials for pressure tanks manufacturing.
